11,000 HANDKERCHIEF EXHIBITION

Our past exhibition has attracted the attention of German artist Walter Bruno Brix von der Eschenaue,he has approached us to participate in his current project. You are most welcome to join. You can send directly to him, or send to Cloth Haven, when we have a parcel full, we will send to him. If you do not have a handkerchief, come and get one free from us.

Look at his website, very interesting. Here is the story:

According to legend,11,000 maidens accompanied Ursula, the pious daughter of the king of Brittany on a pilgrimage to Rome. On their way back they happened upon a band of Huns who were laying siege to Cologne. Since their designs had been thwarted, in their rage the warrior tribe let out their frustration on the maidens and killed every single one of them. Having thus vented their anger, the Huns aborted their initial plans and left Cologne. The citizens of Cologne mourned the maidens’ fate but were relieved to see the fearsome warriors gone. They buried the remains of Ursula and her hapless companions.

To this day, the shield of the city of Cologne remembers the 11,000 martyrs symbolized by 11 flames or teardrops. The historic background of this legend is lost in time.

This art project intends for people to visualize the enormous number of martyrs and to relate the legend to our own time. The individuality of one single person is contrasted with the anonymity in a big mass of people.

Women of every age and from all over the world are invited to participate in this project. Please send a fabric handkerchief on which you have signed your first name using either pencil or pen. The handkerchief can be old or new. You can send in one for yourself or/and sponsor one for other women: your mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, granddaughter, teacher or friend. Since each handkerchief represents one single woman, there should be only one name on it.

Once we receive your handkerchief the name on it will be embroidered. Feel free to embroider the name yourself if you would like.

Once all 11,000 handkerchiefs are collected they will be presented in an exhibition in Cologne and later in other European cities. (Laid out side-by-side the handkerchiefs will cover 800 m^2 (ca. 8,900 square feet) and weigh more than 150 kg (ca. 330 lb)!)
